Food for Thought

A Green Rising: More than indifferent monsoons, this scarcity of water has been caused by over exploitation of groundwater and lack of water conservation measures at the micro level. The answer to this monumental challenge that stares at an otherwise resurgent India comes from Gujarat. The state shows the way in the form of a unique government-people partnership model for water conservation. There results are here to see.
Why is India Poor? What India is today is to a large extent the result of policy choices made by its leaders — especially post India’s independence. Prior to 1947, India’s fortunes were dictated by the British. The British were in India for — not to put too fine a point on it — looting the place. That is totally understandable. Every institution they created was directed towards the final goal of enriching themselves. Colonizers don’t go about colonizing foreign lands out of a sense of altruism. They do it for the moolah.
Cities and Ambition Great cities attract ambitious people. You can sense it when you walk around one. In a hundred subtle ways, the city sends you a message: you could do more; you should try harder

Must read Usability Stories

Here are four links which every person especially those in usability should have a look at.

Kim from cre8pc talks about the scary stuff behind website Usability reviews. An accomplished Usability expert, I agree with her on the travails of a Usability reviewer.

You don't need an introduction to Smashing Magazine if you are in the world of Design. Vitaly and Sven discuss 10 usability nightmares you should be aware of. It's a detailed post featuring atleast one site for each night mare.

Chrys Bader of Clever Cookie talks about the best and worst logos of the century. Though not in agreement, it gives a new perspective.

Barbara Krasnoff talks on information week about the download duel she faces while downloading from IBM and Open Office. I am sure you have seen this a 100 times before.

Me and My Blog gets an award!!

I was surprised to get a comment on my previous post "Do You Know?" saying that I was awarded the "Awe Some Guy Blogger" award.
The rules are simple. Adavait has given me this award. I am sure he did like my blog (else why will he award me?? ). Now it's my turn to select 5 more bloggers. These five folks are supposed to award another five guys this award and link to me. As simple as that.Read on for who my 5 are.

Before I go on with my list of Awesome bloggers(I will have five guys and five girls), let me put my views on this whole awarding stuff.
i) It will give me an opportunity to thank the fellow bloggers whose blog I really appreciate.
ii) It lets other's know what I am reading and what I enjoy reading.
iii) A way to assess my blog reading pattern. I was surprised by the geographic and ethnic pattern of my blog reading.

It was difficult to choose five from so many blogs I read. Here's my criteria for selection:
i) No Community/Group blogs.
ii) Blogs that I read and can identify with the bloggers.
iii) Blogs that I read without fail, but rarely comment on.

So here goes my list:
Awesome Guys:
Himanshu Sheth: Thoughts Prevail (A good friend)
Prashant : Know Prashant (My alter ego)
Tanay Behra: Remain Connected (Creative)
Raymon Chen: The Old New Thing (Techie, One blog i never commented but read all posts in the last 2months)
Thomas: Blogvaria (Short, Regular and very useful posts)

Rocking Gals:
Annie: Buttermilk Clouds , BlogU (If ever, I am in US I would love to visit her and try her cuisines, better known for her blogger University)
Lavanya: All things Considered (Energetic)
Sara: iLoveCode (Techie...)
rads: kowthas (old) (Land of Origin!)
Dhivya: Coffee and Conversations (Waiting to read her next post!!)

Now all the ten folks above, please nominate your 5 or 10 awe some bloggers!

some JavaScript Frame works Comparison

In a previous post of mine, I provided you with a list of SNS platforms. In this post we will see a few JavaScript frameworks being compared among themselves. Mootools has come up with SlickSpeed a page where you can evaluate some popular javascript frameworks.

Update:
The jQuery 1.1.3 is 8x faster than 1.1.2(specified in the above link).

Open Source Web Crawlers

I am back again with one more OpenSource list. Seeing the good response to my previous posts on OpenSource SNS Platforms and OpenSource CMS platforms, I am here presenting you with OpenSource WebCrawlers.

Before I go further let me tell you that WebCrawlers need not be for search engines, they can be used to have a mirror site, advanced web users can use them for working on some sites, people like me who like to browse sites off line can also use them.

The list:

  • Aperture : Aperture is a Java framework for extracting and querying full-text content and metadata from various information systems (e.g. file systems, web sites, mail boxes) and the file formats (e.g. documents, images) occurring in these systems.
  • Arachnid : Java based web spider framework.
  • Arale : Arale can download entire web sites or specific resources from the web.
  • Grub : Grub is a distributed internet crawler/indexer designed to run on multi-platform systems, interfacing with a central server/database.
  • Heritrix : Heritrix is the Internet Archive's open-source, extensible, web-scale, archival-quality web crawler project.
  • HyperSpider : This collects the link structure of a website.
  • J-Spider : A highly configurable and customizable Web Spider engine.
  • JoBo : A basic web spider, with the main advantage over others being that it can automatically fill out forms (e.g. for automated login) and also use cookies for session handling.
  • Metis : Collect information from the content of web sites
  • Nutch : From the Apache stable.
  • OpenWebSpider : OpenWebSpider would be the base for a new Search engine developed from a community of opensource developers!
  • Spider : Spider is a complete standalone Java application designed to easily integrate varied datasources.
  • Web-Harvest : Collect desired Web pages and extract useful data from them.
  • WebEater : A Java program for web site retrieval and offline viewing
  • WebLeach : A fully featured website downloader/mirror tool in Java.
  • WebSphinx : A personal, Customizable crawler.
  • YaCy : Peer-Peer Web Search Engine

Open Source CMS platforms

Following up the good response to the "Open Source Social Networking Platforms", I am back with a list of CMS platforms. If only CMS platforms were as simple as SNS platforms. There are way too many. Not very surprising considering the broad definition of content and the broad applications they are used in. I present here a small list of Open Source CMS platforms, without bothering about all the commercial ones.

At the end of this post, I provide a few links which give you more information than what I mention here.

Open Source: Social Networking Platforms

Social networking is the in thing. It has transcended the realms of your friends. Now we have community sites for almost everything that you can think of. In India too we have lots of startups coming in this space.

Some of you with ideas in this space might be overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do get your idea up and running. Don't worry, there are lot of good open source platforms out there.

If you feel Open source stuff is a bit taxing, then you have some hosted solutions. Just pay a few bucks and you have a full fledged social net running.

What are you waiting for pick your favorite and let your community grow.

This list is by no way exhaustive. If you know of any which are not listed here, do let me know. I will include them here.

Note: The above list is in alphabetical order.

Graph Theory II

In my earlier post I talked about Graph Theory pointing you to the links by MarkCC where he introduces us to Graph Theory and goes on to talk about the first graph theory problem. Then we saw the problem of coloring maps and how it can solved using graph theory.

He goes on to write six more posts detailing various aspects of Graphs. If you interested in Computer Science, then they are a must read. Due to lack of time to explain them over here by myself, I post the links to his posts.

I am sure your fundamentals of Graph Theory are good now. Next in line is Fractals.

Design Resources

This is my first post on design resources. Today I am posting a list of resources which I have come across over the last few days. From now on you will get more and more posts on how to approach design as and when I research a topic I will present my learnings over here.

For now we will go with a list of resources, I will keep updating the list, so keep tuned to this post. Currently I am not rating the links but will keep grading them as it gets updated.

A list Apart. (The best resource for people who make websites)
